Piazza Savonarola

Piazza Savonarola is a historic square in Ferrara bounded by the sixteenth-century portico called "Loggia dei Camerini" of the Town Hall, from the moat of the Castello Estense and the so-called "Covered Street" which is a long building built on arches connecting the castle to the Municipal Palace. At the center of the square stands the statue of the Ferrarese friar Girolamo Savonarola, inaugurated in 1875, supported by an imposing white marble pedestal. The sculpture represents the friar on the pile of wood that will be burned by the fire, with his arms raised and agitated expression, in one of the many tirades that have marked his preaching activities.
