Palazzo Caprara Montpensier - Prefettura di Bologna

Building of the oldest section of the building was got underway by Francesco Caprara in 1561 on a design attributed initially to Francesco Morandi (known as il Terribilia) and subsequently to Niccolò Donati. This was the period during which the Caprara family were on the rise, becoming members of the Bologna Senate in 1616. The 18th century renovation, which included a new extension, was the work of Alfonso Torreggiani among others. The building was later to become the residence of the Viceroy, and in 1805 hosted Napoleon Bonaparte when he visited Bologna.
