Museo missionario dell’Amazzonia (MUMA)

Although MUMA was founded in 2011, a museum about Capuchin missionaries has existed in Assisi since 1973. Father Luciano Matarazzi, the creative spirit behind it, was a friar of many talents: a painter, photographer, and portrait artist. His passion for the Amazon and everything it offered led him to found the Museum of Amazonian Indians. The objects it housed (mounted animals, butterflies, musical instruments, masks, and sundry handicrafts) had been brought back by missionaries who traveled back and forth between the Alto Solimões region in Brazil and Assisi, Italy.
