The square in which the church is located, was the center of the economical activities of the city. Its name, Piazza Banchi (Banks' Square), is a direct evidence of the importance of the site.The church was built in the XVI century, after an epidemy. A special type of popular contribution was requested, which determined the rather original architectural solution of the church standing over a group of commercial buildings.
