San Giovanni di Pré (meaning "meadows" in the local dialect and alluding to the farming village that existed in this area next to the city walls 1000 years ago) began life as a convent and hospital/hostel in 1180, built on the orders of the Knights of Jerusalem. The location was of particular strategic importance: near the expanding port and on the main road from Northern Italy, with easy access to drinking water thanks to the S. Ugo river flowing nearby. The complex was built to host knights, pilgrims and merchants bound for the Holy Land, where the Third Crusade was taking place at the time.
