Cella del Tasso

The Cell of Torquato Tasso is a reconstruction made on philological basis and detailed studies of the cell where the poet was locked up. It is located in the basement of the remaining buildings of the former St. Anne Hospital of Ferrara (demolished in the '30 of the '900). The poet remained locked up at the behest of the Duke of Ferrara Alfonso d'Este II from 1579 to 1586 for having railed against the Ducal Court on the occasion of the wedding of the Duke in a fit of rage. The original cell has been lost (being located where today there is via Boldini), but they have obtained a similar one in the remaining parts of the underground, in the foundations of the Conservatory.
